Studio Policies
Lesson Expectations
Students will attend lessons ready to sing, play, move, and learn. Lessons will focus on developing musicianship skills, technique, and live-performance training. Students are required to bring water, a digital audio-recording device, pencil, and a dedicated 3-ring binder for lessons. Guardians are always allowed to observe lessons.
Practice Expectations
Students should have access to some form of piano keyboard, even if that is a piano app on a mobile device or a virtual piano (https://recursivearts.com/virtual-piano/). Students are required to listen to their lesson recording at least once in the week following the lesson, and use it as a resource to practice. Students should do all exercises prescribed in the previous lesson as practice. Students should practice in short, consistent sessions, about 5-20 minutes daily depending on the age and level of the student. This time can be broken into smaller chunks throughout the day. Practice should take place in a location where the student can comfortably sing full-voiced. Singing is an athletic use of the body, and requires mental and physical health to achieve the best results. Therefore, consistent practice, sufficient sleep, balanced nutrition, and healthy relationships and mindset are all crucial for effective learning.
Copyright Music
Students must bring two copies of any assigned sheet music in a binder to all subsequent lessons: one copy for the teacher and one for the student. In compliance with copyright laws, students must use legally-purchased sheet music through a service such as musicnotes.com or through book purchase.
Cancellations and Tardiness
Lessons occur once-a-week at a mutually agreed upon time. If, for any reason, the student is not able to meet at the regularly scheduled lesson time, the student must contact me as soon as possible. “No-shows” will not be rescheduled under any circumstances. A 15 minute grace-period for tardiness will be granted before a lesson is considered a “no-show” and forfeited. Lessons will always end on time, even if the student arrives late. In the case that a lesson is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, a makeup may be granted according to my discretion. If 24 hours advance notice of cancellation is given, I will attempt to reschedule the lesson at a mutually agreed upon time. In the rare event that I cancel a lesson, a makeup lesson time will be offered, and if a makeup is unfeasible for the student, a refund for the lesson will be made.
Illness
Students will not attend lessons with a contagious illness. If a student attends a lesson with any obvious signs of a contagious illness, the lesson will be forfeit, and the student will be asked to leave.
Discontinuation of Lessons
Music is a lifelong pursuit, but lessons are not always possible for a multitude of reasons. Whatever the reason, I will never take discontinuation of lessons personally. If you are unsatisfied with your lessons for any reason, or if you are contemplating quitting lessons, please speak freely to me about your concerns. Mutual respect is a key goal in the studio. As studio owner, I reserve the right to remove students from the schedule if they have poor attendance, poor practice habits, or if they repeatedly break any studio policies.
